ALMASI applies several simple ways to support communities to improve their health. Our focus is strengthening and mobilizing capability within the normal community setting, helping communities to improve their own health after sensitization campaigns to create awareness. ALMASI believes that services will be sustainable when communities are involved in services design and implementation, as well as in defining the foreseen impacts together.

ALMASI trains individuals from a given community; these individuals are called “Community Health Workers” (CWH), who must come from a community to be able to provide the needed community health education. A CHW is a trusted and well-trained member of the community who empowers their peers through education, health, and social resources within the community. This is a sustainable approach because the CWH belongs to the community, speaks the same local language, knows the community traditions, costumes, and culture, and, therefore, they are well trusted.

ALMASI targets, but is not limited to, the following areas in health-related intervention:

COVID-19 awareness:

The stress produced by the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically increased problems in rural communities in Tanzania. Their livelihood has dramatically changed, and if the pandemic continues, it will cause severe effects because of the lack of resources and knowledge about prevention and treatment. ALMASI works to provide women and their communities with accurate information and health resources needed to prevent the spread of this pandemic disease. From handwashing to hygiene kits, women across Tanzania work hard to protect themselves, their families, and their communities from coronavirus, but they lack the necessary knowledge, skills, and resources to be successful. ALMASI is their survival partner in creating a safe place to live happily.

Reproductive health:

There is a long history of reproductive health programs and much expertise to learn from, including, for example, community health programs executed by local governments and other organizations. However, these programs often cause confusion instead of understanding because of barriers like language, traditions, and cultural norms. Most Maasai women go through childbirth at home with traditional nurses, and that can cause deaths and health problems due to the lack of reproductive health knowledge. ALMASI supports the simplification of health-related approaches aimed to suit communities and to create the proper networking with professional health organizations. This would allow Maasai women to access reproductive health training to open their minds to the importance of planning to do delivery in the hospital/health centers and attending clinics for pregnant women and babies.

Hygiene and sanitation awareness:

The sanitation crisis is most acute in rural areas which lack basic sanitation. Women and girls are extremely impacted by lack of access to hygiene and sanitation. ALMASI promotes three key practices that can significantly reduce these risks: handwashing; access to affordable sanitation facilities at home; and hygienic treatment, handling, and storage of drinking water. In Tanzania, especially in the rural Maasai community, many girls do not have access to sanitary supplies to deal with their monthly period/menstruation. Girls are often limited from activities, family, work, and school interaction when they are menstruating. ALMASI is working hard to ensure that affordable sanitary supplies are available as an effective way to give girls confidence and to allow them to be comfortable at school and within the community.

Reproductive health:

ALMASI uses inclusive solutions-putting communities in decision making, and that includes applying community-informed strategies, exploring simple tailored technology options that are suitable, acceptable, and compatible with rural communities. ALMASI programs begin from a good understanding of communities’ geography, culture and traditions, socio-economic situations, and the best proven evidence of what works in a rural context.

Objectives

Community with brighter futures

To work toward economic and social development of disadvantaged women girls, and children, individuals, groups, and communities in Tanzania.

To facilitate community healthcare development, health awareness, and health promotion campaigns in rural communities in Tanzania.

To assist in the process of social integration and personal realization of under disadvantaged children, girls, and women.

To support pastoralists through livestock transformation initiatives, livestock to market initiatives, mindset shifting, market improvements, and better prices for livestock.

To support formal education initiatives in rural areas, especially introducing Adult Literacy program and child early learning and pre-school systems in rural communities in Tanzania

To reduce dependency on one source of income and to facilitate livelihood diversification as a resilience strategy, assuring that households have an alternative source of income if a major shock like drought and subsequent loss of livestock strikes one of their income generating strategies.

To support bottom-up approaches for economic transformation through the establishment of village Banking systems (VICOBA).
